Kathlyn (Kara) Cooney, Ph.D.

Dr. Kathlyn (Kara) Cooney is a renowned professor of Egyptian Art and Architecture and the Chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures at UCLA. She specializes in the study of craft production, coffin reuse, and the economies of the ancient world. Earning her PhD in Egyptology from Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Cooney has made significant contributions to the field, including co-curating the -- Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs -- exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2005. Her work extends beyond academia to media production, having created and hosted the television series 'Out of Egypt,' a comparative archaeology program that aired on the Discovery Channel in 2009 and is available on Netflix and Amazon.

Dr. Cooney’s ongoing research focuses on the reuse of coffins during the 21st Dynasty of ancient Egypt, exploring the impact of the era's socioeconomic and political turmoil on funerary practices. Over the course of five to six years, she has traveled extensively to document more than 300 coffins in collections worldwide, including those in Cairo, London, Paris, Berlin, and Vatican City. She is also a prolific author, with her 2021 book 'The Good Kings: Absolute Power in Ancient Egypt and the Modern World' published by National Geographic Books, and her most recent book, 'Recycling for Death: Coffin Reuse in Ancient Egypt and the Theban Royal Caches', released in 2024 by The American University in Cairo Press.
